Syria (officially the Syrian Arab Republic) is a country in West Asia located in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Levant, with Damascus as its capital and largest city.
Geography and Climate
- Borders: It is bordered by Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east and southeast, Jordan to the south, Israel and Lebanon to the southwest, and the Mediterranean Sea to the west.
- Landscape: The country features a narrow coastal plain, western mountain ranges (including the Anti-Lebanon mountains and Mount Hermon), the fertile Euphrates River valley in the northeast, and the vast Syrian Desert (Badia) covering the central and southern areas.
- Climate: It has a Mediterranean climate along the coast with hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters, while the inland and desert regions experience much hotter summers and colder winters.
People and Culture
- Demographics: The population is predominantly Arab, with significant communities of Kurds, Turkmens, Armenians, and Assyrians.
- Religion: The majority of the population is Sunni Muslim, alongside groups such as Alawites, Ismailis, Druze, and Christians.
- Language: Arabic is the official and most widely spoken language.
